
In 2000 when the 4-year old Qian Hongyan got involved in a car accident. This led her to lose her legs. In order for her to walk around because she couldn’t afford any prosthetics, her grandfather attached a portion of a basketball to her legs and created two wooden handles, this is to support the young girl’s weight. She was since then dubbed as the “Basketball Girl.” Despite the difficulties, Qian shared that she was very happy when she used the basketball. And now, she is a successful swimmer who first joined local Chinese swim team “South of the Cloud.” Last 2009, she qualified for the Paralympics and brought home one gold medal and two silver medals even though she didn’t have legs.
